Claire Hartmann-ThompsonAreas of Research Interest

  • Biobased Chemicals – Advances in biotechnology and agricultural practices have given rise to a new generation of biobased chemicals and materials.  These include materials such as poly(lactic acid), poly(propyleneterephthalate) and poly(hydroxyalkanoates) and biobased chemicals such as ethanol, glycerol, propylene glycol, succinic acid and butanol.  The development of structure-property relationships for biobased materials is an area of research, as is their conversion into commercially interesting products, especially devising new biobased routes for existing petrochemicals.
  • Polymer/Materials Science – The characterization of polymer molecular properties such as stereochemistry, molecular weight distribution and composition, and material properties such as crystalline morphology, orientation, strain hardening and the molecular dynamics associated with thermal relaxations, are areas of interest.  The characterization of long chain branching architecture and its influence on polymer rheology using a new chromatographic technique, Molecular Topology Fractionation, is also an area of interest.
  • Polymer Spectroscopy – The application of nuclear magnetic resonance, infrared and Raman spectroscopies to the characterization of such materials as biomass and biobased polymeric materials.
